Originally a Gallic place of worship, Montmartre became a major centre of pilgrimage devoted to Saint Denis during the Middle Ages. In 1133, the Benedictines took control of Montmartre. The fields, famous for their vines and mills, extended to the area known today as the 9th district. Thanks to its strategic geographical location, it was occupied by Henri de Navarre in 1590, then by the Cossacks in 1814 and finally by the English in 1815.
From the 19th century, Montmartre was colonized by artists attracted by the reasonable rental costs. Its popular bars and its painters, from Corot to Picasso, made it legendary. Sacré Coeur, completed in 1917, sits majestically on top of the hill.
Today:
Today, the Place of the Hillock is a stronghold of restaurants and cafés. Deep in a labyrinth of lanes and staircases, the cemetery of Montmartre is a spectacle not to be missed. Just minutes from there on foot, you will reach the Place of the Abbesses or the legendary Nimble Lapin (www.au-lapin-agile.com), a cabaret club once frequented by Modigliani and Braque. On the boulevards at the foot of the hill, the trip will be completed with a visit to the illustrious Moulin-Rouge (www.moulinrouge.fr), where the Cancan was invented, immortalized by the painter Toulouse-Lautrec.
